*   Pitbull was born with “cocaine in his blood” – to an addicted mother.

 

*   His father left them early on so he was raised by a single mother who used drug money to make ends meet.

 

*   Pitbull had to switch high-schools 8 times.

 

*   Drug dealing was all he saw growing up – so it was natural that he got caught up in it too.

 

*  Because of that – Pitbull did not actually graduate high-school. An angry principal printed a diploma for him and told him to “leave campus and not come back”.

 

 * He never did any cocaine himself because he saw how it affected his parents and he didn’t want that for his own life.

 

*   Even as a child, Pitbull “loved looking for new challenges”.

 

*  Pitbull: “I started to understand the opportunity I had if I really focused” “That’s number one (#1) in anything: Understanding the opportunity you have”.

 

* He wanted to be the biggest rapper in Miami – so he began by writing rhymes. “I just wrote rhymes, rhymes, rhymes, rhymes.”

 

* Pitbull: “No one’s going to envision your vision the way you envision your vision”.

 

* Pitbull: “…there’s nothing better than to be an intern in life”. (Always be willing and eager to LEARN!)

 

* He sought out new experts to collaborate with and learn from. (Don’t be afraid to ask for help from people who’ve gone before you).

 

* Pitbull: “I’m constantly studying the game”

 

* Once successful, Pitbull wanted to stand for something. He wanted to use his influence for GOOD so he built a state-of-the-art school – called SLAM in his old neighborhood. At seven stories high – it serves as a beacon of hope.

 

* Pitbull: “Always be an intern in life”. “Always be open to learning – even when you are at the top of your game”. “The moment you get comfortable being an ‘executive’ is the moment you begin to fail”.

Cool Career: Event Planner

She Plans Parties, Events & Celebrations! Sound like a cool career? 

Jennifer Cleary's first job was bussing tables at a seafood restaurant in Wareham, MA.  Now she's the Catering and Events Manager for a major Boston restaurant group.  All day long she plans events, parties and celebrations for major companies like Google, Facebook and Microsoft.  She also plans bridal showers, wedding rehe arsal dinners and birthday celebrations that are hosted at the restaurant.  (continued below the video)

Jennifer's Top Advice

Start working your way towards you 'Dream Career' NOW.  Jennifer's first job in #TheBiz was bussing tables during the summer when she was in high-school.  She also was a hostess, a waitress and a bartender.  ALL of those jobs and experiences helped her succeed in her new career as an 'Event Planner".

Be open to new opportunities.  Jennifer's friend needed help at the restaurant he worked at one night and she said "Sure!".  That experience made her realize that she wanted to work in the restaurant industry.

Use online tools to their fullest.  Jennifer made sure she had a great LinkedIn profile for potential employers to see.  

Use Social Media to be the first to find out when jobs post.  Jennifer followed Boston's major restaurant groups like "The Briar Group on Facebook (14 restaurants!).  When she saw them post a job opening for 'Events Manager' she contacted them right away and after 2-3 interviews - she got the job! 

Jennifer's Career Path

Start Jennifer is from Massachusetts - home to MANY seafood restaurants.  During the summer she bussed tables for a local seafood restaurant in Wareham, MA.  After the first night she walked away with a pocketful of cash and was hooked!  

College Jennifer went to Newbury College in Brookline, MA.  She wasn't sure what she was going to do there... Ultimately she graduated after 2 years with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts.  It has transferred very well for her in her career as an Event Planner.

#JustDoIt One night hanging out in the dorms... Her friend who worked at a local restaurant said he needed some help and asked if anyone could work the 'take-out' window?  Jennifer said "Sure!".  She had so much fun that night that she decided to make the 'Restaurant Industry' her career.  

 

Top Tip: You never know when opportunity will arise.  Be open to new adventures like Jennifer was and go for it!  By her saying 'Yes' to helping her friend out that night - she found her path! 

 

1st Job Jennifer's 1st "real job" after college was at 'The Rattlesnake Bar & Grill'.  She was 21 years old.  She was out to eat one night and decided to fill out an application! #WhyNot 

 

Jennifer loved meeting new people and that every day was different!  She loved the excitement and fast pace of the restaurant business!

 

 

2nd Job Jennifer's next job was with one of Boston's most famous restaurant groups: 'Legal Seafoods' - where she was a waitress. 

Ambition Jennifer always strives for MORE in her work so she joined 'Legal Seafood's' "President's Advisory Council" (P.A.C.).  They call you a 'P.A.C. Member'!  The members of this group meet monthly with the President of Legal Seafoods and give him feedback.  Among other things, they give the President feedback on what the customer's are saying... what they like and dislike.

Ambition On top of her waitressing duties - Jennifer was in charge of teaching the 'fish class' and the 'wine class' to new hires at the restaurant. A very prestigious role - as these are very important duties for new waiters and waitresses! 

Travel Jennifer saved so much money that she decided to travel.  She visited the U.K. and went to many places like Ireland.  Fun Fact!  Because she had this waitressing experience - she was able to get a job and worked at a pub in Ireland.  A great life-experience for her!

3rd Job A great manager that Jennifer worked for put her in touch with 'Plaza 3' in Faneuil Hall.   There she was hired as the "Bar Manager.  This was a really big step in her career!

Jennifer really took advantage of her new job and worked hard to learn everything she could about the restaurant industry!  She learned how to hire staff, file invoices and process inventory among many things.  She wanted to learn all that she could about managing a restaurant 

 

4th Job Jennifer's next job was at another famous Boston restaurant, the 'Globe Bar and Cafe' on Boylston.  There she was Assistant General Manager to the owner AND she got to bartend 2 nights a week which let her continue to work on the service side of the job - the part she loves so much.  Jennifer was working in the best of both worlds of the industry she loved - management and service. 

It was Jennifer's customers who gave her the idea for her next career move - into Event Planning!  You never know where you'll get inspiration - so always be listening and let people know that you need help!

 

 

The Search Jennifer was job-searching on CraigsList .org There she found an ad for a catering manager at The Harvard Club of Boston.   

Just Try Jennifer had very little event planning experience - but she went for the interview anyway and stayed true to her personality and true to her career goals and the manager saw that.  She was hired!

Promotion After a year Jennifer was promoted to 'Member Events Manager'.  She was very excited to be working at a 5-Star Platinum Premiere Club!  She worked with the provost of Harvard as well as judges, lawyers and doctors and they all listened to her!  At first it was hard for her to believe...

Great Tip Jennifer succeeded in her new job because she just naturally treated all these people like they were someone sitting at her bar!  She didn't get intimidated by them and kept confidence in herself.

 

Confidence With this new job, Jennifer's confidence grew, her resume grew and she was very very proud of herself for this accomplishment!  She really learned the value of speaking well, sitting up straighter and being present - so important

Big Move After 8 years later she missed the social aspect of working in a restaurant and wondered how can she could combine the best of both worlds.  

LinkedIn She ramped up her LinkedIn profile and used it to its full potential, she got clear on what she wanted to do, revisited her resume and really built it up.

Facebook Jennifer followed companies that she liked on Facebook.  She watched their posts and events and one day a post came up from the Briar Restaurant Group saying they were looking for an event manager and to email a resume. 

Interview 2 days later she went on an interview.  It went great, she loved the vibe and was called in for a 2nd interview.

Success All of Jennifer's experience at different restaurants and The Harvard Club transferred well to this new position.  Her hard work from her time bussing tables to waitressing to bartending really paid off... She was hired!  

 

Jennifer is happy when she is making people happy! 

Start Your Path to Becoming an Event Planner 

Follow 'Events' 'Event Planner' & 'Event Planning' & 'Event Coordinator Job' boards on Pinterest.  It's FREE!  Start to create your own boards to inspire your next creation.  Pinterest is great! Just start searching...

Offer to volunteer to create event or help with them at your school, church or community organizations.   Make sure and take photos of yourself at work and post to your social media.  You never know who's watching... 

Take an hour a day to keep up with 'The Biz'.  It's FREE to read 'Entertaining & Events' magazines online or at the library.  Start to learn the top event planner's names and companies in any city you live in.   Reach out to them to see if they hire during the summer or accept interns.   

Constantly update your resume with your new event-planning experience. 

Make sure your LinkedIn profile is strong and that your resume is posted on it.  Make sure and update it regularly. 

Create a unique Instagram ___ where you will post only your Event Experience and work.  (NOT your skateboard adventures... that's for your personal social media).  Start hash tagging and tagging event companies so they will learn about you and your interests and take notice! 

Just like Jennifer - FOLLOW your favorite restaurants and event companies on Facebook.  Comment on their awesomeness and when you see a Job Posting - go for it or ask them about an internship! Here's the Briar-Group's Facebook page!

Work your way UP!  Many great event planners, chefs and restaurant owners started at the bottom.  Once you have a dishwasher job or start bussing tables - you are on the INSIDE.  You'll be the first to know when the restaurant you work for needs new staff and you can talk to you manager about giving you a shot!  Ask to fill-in or shadow a team member on your day off.  #ImpressTheBoss !

Career Path: Working for a Non-Profit. Matthew's #CoolCareer

Would you love be able to raise money to support your favorite cause or non-profit and GET PAID FOR IT?!  

Matthew Dickey is a professional fundraiser.  As "Director of Development" for the historical non-profit, "Gore Place Society" (GorePlace.org) he networks and connects with both new, potential donors as well as keeping connections with long-time donors.

What's "Development"?  It's the term or title for a professional fund-raiser - or raising money for non-profits.

Parties, events and fundraisers are another perk that makes his - a really #CoolCareer !

Matthew's Top Advice:

1. Get out there and experience different things so that you can learn what you like and what kind of career you'd like to have. 
2. Just do SOMETHING.  Try something new!
3. The best way to find out what you like to do is to experiment with new roles.
4. Volunteering at different kinds of organizations is a great way to experiment with a new type of work or job to see if you like it. 
5. It comes down to "Who do you know?"  Building your Network is KEY.
6. The way to do that?  You can meet people! by doing different things!  
7. Get out of your comfort zone 
8. Doing things that are different to what you normally do - makes you grow as an individual. 
9. New experiences help you see perspectives from other people's eyes. 
10. Matthew knows that he will always have a job because of his fund-raising skills.  Every company needs to raise money! 

 

Matthew's Career Path

Start: Matthew went to High School in Collinsville, Illinois.  (Home to the world's largest ketchup bottle!)  He was obsessed with Architecture and was always drawing little buildings.  

 

Curve Ball: After High School, Matthew wanted to study at an Architectural College (to learn to design buildings).  However, he hates 'Standardized Tests' and didn't do well on the college entrance exams so he didn't get into any of the colleges that he applied to. 

Instead he stayed near his home and went to Art School and got a Bachelor's of Fine Art Degree in Painting.

 

How He Paid for School: He worked at a grocery store as a cashier and bagger for 5 1/2 years to pay for his college.

 

Tough Times: Matthew graduated from college in 2008 - during the U.S. "Great Recession".   There were few jobs for anyone - especially someone with an art degree.

 

 

Instead, he decided to volunteer for a year to gain new experiences.  Matthew says, the best way to see what kind of job you'd like to do is to volunteer with different organizations!

Curve Ball: Matthew was excited for his first volunteer position but it lost it's funding so he did not get into the program that he was originally accepted to.

 

Winner: Matthew didn't let that daunt him.  Instead, he applied to all the regions that the program was in and got into Boise, Idaho.   A far cry from New York City but it turned out great because ultimately he met his wife there!

 

Pivotal Moment: While there he taught art to refugee children and English to refugee adults.

This experience changed his life!

He was inspired by the refugee's determination.  He knew he wanted to help people.

It also showed him that he wanted to experience living outside of the U.S. - to explore another culture. 

 

Travel: Matthew then went to live in Peru for 6 months to teach art to children in the Andean Mountains near Machu Picchu. 

 

Matthew didn't know how to speak their language but he just winged it!  He learned more Spanish in 3 weeks while living in Peru than in all the years he studied in school.  Experiences are Key!

Next Step: After traveling, Matthew came back to the U.S. but he still "Didn't know what he wanted to do with his life".  He drove around and couch surfed while checking out different schools to see where he wanted to live. Ultimately this brought him to Boston 

 

Work & School: Matthew worked and also went to Boston University.  He graduated and received a degree in "Arts Administration and Museum Management" didn't know wha the wanted to do but knew he loved helping others. 

 

Job: Matthew worked at a coffee shop and also curated their art gallery while he went to school. 

 

After College - 1st Job: Matthew worked in "Development" (fund-raising) for United South End Settlements USES.org

2nd Job: Matthew's next job was "Development Manager" for 'Raw Art Works' in Lynn, MA. RawArtWorks.org

 

RawArtWorks.org - RAW'S mission is to IGNITE the DESIRE to CREATE and the CONFIDENCE TO SUCCEED in underserved youth. (and they have cool videos!)

 

3rd Job: Matthew is not the "Director of Development" (top dog!) for Gore Place Society. GorePlace.org 

 

Matthew likes that his job combines his interests with his hobbies and that's a good balance.

This List Has 35 Schools That Received Money To Help You Get Job Training - Is Your School On It?

(Source: Mass.gov) On February 25, 2016, Massachusetts's Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito announced $9.3 million in workforce skills equipment grants (MONEY!) to 35 high schools, community colleges and vocational training providers across the Commonwealth for vocational-technical education and training equipment purchases that connect Massachusetts students and residents to economic opportunities in high-demand industries. (aka: JOBS!)

• Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School will construct a fully computerized hydroponic greenhouse to support vocational programming in the biotechnology and culinary fields, including research, food production, farm-to-table sustainability, and nutritional processes.

Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School, Charlton - $295,500

• Bay Path’s machine tool modernization project will provide vocational-technical students and adult learners in southern Worcester County with modern advanced manufacturing machinery and robotics equipment.

Berkshire Community College, Pittsfield - $465,119 A

• Berkshire Community College will upgrade and modernize its manufacturing and engineering program, utilizing new hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical controls, materials testing, CNC and 3D printing equipment to train students and adult learners for careers in advanced manufacturing, engineering, and biotechnology.

Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District, Upton - $407,517

• Brockton High School’s Youth Career Connect program trains students for careers the health care, advanced manufacturing, and information technology. Workforce Skills Capital Program funds will provide training equipment upgrades across the three career concentrations.

Cape Cod Regional Vocational Technical High School, Harwich - $312,500

• Grant funds will prepare students in the school’s engineering program to understand, design, integrate and troubleshoot concepts related to advanced manufacturing and automated systems, and will support a revamping of horticultural and landscaping training.

Center for Manufacturing Technology, Woburn - $91,832

• CMT will deepen its capacity to train dislocated and incumbent workers in advanced manufacturing processes by purchasing new computer-controlled machinery.

Dean Technical High School, Holyoke - $393,156

• As part of the Holyoke Public Schools’ comprehensive turnaround effort, Dean Technical High School will transform its existing machine technology shop into an advanced manufacturing shop that aligns with current industry practices and technologies, in order to connect Holyoke students to career opportunities in the Pioneer Valley’s skilled manufacturing workforce.

The English High School, Boston - $137,888

• The English High School will support the city of Boston’s commitment to diversifying its police department. By launching a new vocational program in protective services, English will prepare students for entry into the city’s Police Cadet Program.

Essex North Shore Technical and Agricultural School District, Danvers - $144,186

• Essex Tech’s Workforce Skills Capital Program grant will allow the school to expand its heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technical program, and enable the school to add adult basic education training opportunities.

Franklin County Technical School, Montague - $52,500

• Franklin County Technical School will revamp its computer programming and web design programs, and expand the programs’ capacity to reach adult learners.

Greater Lawrence Technical School, Andover - $316,514

• Greater Lawrence will update its Metal Fabrication and Joining Technologies Department, training students for careers in the welding and metal fabrication industries.

Greater Lowell Technical High School, Tyngsborough - $493,395

• State funding will advance Greater Lowell’s efforts to automate its Machine Technology Shop, to create a state-of-the-art Precision/Advanced Manufacturing Training Center.

Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, New Bedford - $495,000

• The Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School will overhaul its advanced manufacturing training equipment, connecting high school students, Bristol Community College students, adult basic education learners, and unemployed individuals in the region to training in modern manufacturing processes.

Haverhill High School, Haverhill - $218,671

• Haverhill High School will purchase a suite of career technical training equipment, including new computers, 3D printers, robotics kits, and medical training equipment, in order to expand training in technology, computer programming and web development, and to provide new early-college STEM programs for at-risk students.

Leominster High School, Leominster - $227,236

• Leominster High School’s Center for Technical Education innovation will revamp its machine technology and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration programs by purchasing new advanced milling machines, and by purchasing simulation systems to support education in clean energy technologies, including solar and geothermal energy.

Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative, West Springfield - $257,100

• Grant funds will enable Lower Pioneer Valley to expand the capacity of its recently-founded high school Machine Technology Program, and to extend programming to adult learners, including unemployed and underemployed individuals facing barriers to employment.

McCann Technical School, North Adams - $121,128

• McCann Technical School will revamp its welding and metal fabrication equipment to train students for careers in Berkshire County’s aerospace, defense, commercial, medical device, and power generation industries, and will enable re-training for unemployed workers.

Middlesex Community College, Lowell - $117,086

• MCC will expand training capacity in its rapidly growing IT cybersecurity program by constructing a new, dedicated cybersecurity lab at the college’s Lowell campus.

Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School, Lexington - $500,000

• Minuteman will use grant funds to launch a new advanced manufacturing and metal fabrication program, connecting students to careers in robotics, automation, engineering, and construction.

Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School District, Fitchburg - $136,412

• The Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School will launch a new program in veterinary science, training students in STEM programming, and allowing students to earn no-cost college credits at Becker College.

Murdock High School, Winchendon - $86,166

• Winchendon’s Engineering for the 21st Century project will connect high school students to new career-oriented classes in computer science, video game design, web design, and advanced robotics programming.

Nashoba Valley Technical School, Westford - $500,000

• Nashoba Valley Technical School will expand its advanced manufacturing career programming, and will provide additional training opportunities for veterans, and chronically unemployed populations.

New England Center for Arts and Technology, Boston - $51,163

• NECAT will deepen its capacity to provide culinary training and support services to low-income adults facing barriers to employment, by purchasing several pieces of equipment, including kitchen appliances and computers.

North Bennet Street School, Boston - $85,545

• The North Bennet Street School will expand the capacity of its successful carpentry program, and replace outdated training equipment.

Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy, Springfield - $441,500

• Springfield’s Putnam Vocational Technical Academy will launch a new program to equip students with the skills to enter the construction workforce, including training with heavy equipment.

Somerville High School - $355,500

• Somerville High School will replace outdated equipment in its machine shop with modern advanced machining equipment that will enable low-income students and adult learners to access training for careers in advanced machine manufacturing. The workforce equipment grant complements Somerville High’s new fabrication lab, funded in a recent Urban Agenda grant award.

South Shore Vocational Technical High School, Hanover - $231,419

• Grant funds will improve vocational education across several programs, enhancing student work space in South Shore’s electronics and graphic communications programs, and opening cybersecurity training to students studying information technology.

Southeastern Regional Vocational School District, South Easton - $100,911

• The Southeastern Regional Vocational School District will construct a new Agile Maker Space lab to equip students in its construction, engineering, and manufacturing technology programs with rapid design and production expertise.

Springfield Technical Community College - $499,785

• Springfield Technical Community College will enhance training in its Laser Electro-Optics and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Technology programs, by creating an advanced laser machining laboratory, and a one-year Laser Materials Processing Certificate of Completion, in order to meet the needs of the Commonwealth’s rapidly-growing laser-manufacturing industry.

Tantasqua Regional Vocational High School, Fiskdale - $98,899

• New machine tooling equipment at Tantasqua Regional Vocational High School will enable students to train on the same advanced tooling equipment used by area machine shops, creating direct career pipelines.

Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical School District, Franklin - $242,627

• Franklin’s Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical School will expand its engineering technology and advanced manufacturing education to include training with 3D printing and robotics, and, in partnership with Wentworth Institute of Technology, will expand its adult manufacturing education programs.

Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School, Bourne - $422,907

• The Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School will purchase state-of-the art landscape construction equipment, increasing the effectiveness of its Horticulture and Landscape Contracting program.

Worcester Technical High School, Worcester - $347,882

• Worcester Technical High School, in collaboration with Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, will expand its veterinary assistant training program purchasing IT equipment to add virtual classroom capabilities, and by updating the school’s clinical equipment.

Her Career Path: From 'The Projects in Harlem' to Financial Success

By her own account, Patricia Rowan wasn't always this successful... 

Her life may have been very different if it weren't for a change in her school that took her from her neighborhood in Harlem into downtown New York City.  

Now Patricia has a Global Role with Procter & Gamble's Gillette Corporation and travels the world in Business Class!  She's lived in several major cities and has done work in some of the most exciting, exotic countries in the world. 

Hear how from her first school-bus ride into New York City at the age of 13, she discovered a whole new world of people and opportunity and from then on - knew her life could be different.  She shares the steps she took to achieve more career and financial success than she could have ever imagined...and hopes to inspire YOU next.

Pat's Top Advice:

1. Experiences are the key to change and success.  It's what changed her life.
2. For Pat, she knew that education was the key to changing her life.
3. It pays to speak up.
4. ASK FOR HELP.
5. A 'no' might mean a 'no' for today but it's not a 'no' forever. 
6. You can make a "way" when there is "no way".
7. You HAVE to keep trying!
8. Have contacts (Network!) and let people know what you are up to and what you are looking for. (Speak Up!)
9. Believe in yourself - even when you're scared.  (Pat still gets scared but she believes in herself and powers though!) 
10. Resources may be inside you or they may be around you.  Use your Resources and Network.

 

Pat's Career Path

Tough Start: Patricia (Pat) grew up on "on the 20th floor of a Project House" in Harlem, New York.  She is 1 of 5 kids.  She felt confined by what she calls, "the four walls of Harlem".  She didn't know anything about life beyond her neighborhood. 

 

Pivotal Moment: One year, her school district changed and she was bused out of Harlem into downtown New York City.  She says: That experience of leaving Harlem - is what changed her destiny.  For the first time, she saw that her life could be something different and thought "I want to be like that too".   She knew she wanted to shoot for more. 

 

1st Job: Pat got her first job while she was still in High-School.  She worked because she saw people around her doing better and doing more.  She wanted to have her own money.  She worked in a grocery store as a cashier and grocery bagger. 

 

Mantra: Pat is the type of person who when she sees something - she goes after it!

 

School: Pat's parents did not go to college but Pat realized that EDUCATION was THE KEY to HER changing her life.

 

College: When Pat graduated from high-school, she applied to college and got in.  In college she wasn't sure what she wanted to do.  She thought being a doctor would be a good idea because that's the only career she'd really heard of. 

Pat loves people so she took a class in Psychology and did really well in it.  She also found that she LIKED reading about Psychology and even chose to read and learn about the subject just for fun!  That's when she knew what she wanted to do with her life.

2nd Job: Pat worked at McDonalds between her freshmen and sophomore year in college.  She learned that if she wanted to succeed and do better - she needed to work.  Life was not going to be handed to her on a silver platter.  

 

While working at McDonald's, Pat realized she had to focus on school to have a better life. 

 

 

Bump: Once out of college, Pat decided that she wanted to continue her schooling and get her Master's degree.  When she told her Mom though - her Mom said there was no money.  Pat did get accepted to 'Graduate School' and was excited.  However, she was told the school had no financial aid for her.  

 

Undaunted: Her Mother took her up to the University and met with the Dean of Psychology.  His department had no money for Pat.  Finally, the dean had an idea and found some financial aid in a completely different department where Pat wasn't even taking courses.

The experience taught her to not take 'No' for an answer and to be nimble in her thinking.  If she heard 'No' to one try - then she would try another direction until it worked out for her. 

 

 

Big Break: Pat helped some engineering students at her campus with their project.  They then referred her to the company, 'Procter & Gamble' where Pat got her first interview. 

 

The lesson she learned there?  "I need to have contacts and let people know what I was up to and what I was looking for."
